SHRI SHANMUGANANDA ASHRAMAM
(Public Charitable Trust Regd No: 12/59)
In the Southern part of India, on the bank of river Cauvery, the famous town of Kumbakonam still vibrates with the spiritual heritage of Adhi Shankara, the exponent of Vedanta who had a seat of knowledge established here. Though time has withered the sanctity with its onslaught of self-centered modern thought, still the traces of altruistic motives remain rarified and scattered in this pilgrim town.
This is an appeal from Shri Shanmugananda Ashramam which runs an orphanage, consisting of 100 boys hailing from different caste and creed and the lower strata of the society. It was established in 1936 under the aegis of Samarasa Suddha Sanmarka Sangam, the spiritual path of Saint Ramalinga Thiruvarutprakasa Vallalar a contemporary of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa of Kali Ghat, Calcutta.
The Orphanage imparts devotion to God, devotion to life and human values, besides education among the younger generation. It was started in 1954 with five orphan boys by Thavathiru N.RAMDASS ANNA and Mr. M.S.PICHAIMUTHU. Then came another noble soul, Mr.U.P.SENGODA GOUNDER who took up the responsibility of the growing Orphanage. In 1959, the orphanage was shifted to the present location in Kottaiyur at the out skirts of Kumbakonam on the bank of river Cauvery and expanded to accomodate more orphan boys.
In 1963, a Middle school was started for the benefit of the orphan-boys and some of the poor rural folk living around the place. In 1981 it was upgraded into High School with the munificent help of Mr. HASHMUKHLAL GOPALDAS MEHTA, the Senior managing partner of Gopaldas Group of Companies at Kumbakonam who has taken over the
reins of administration. Since then the Ashramam with its orphanage has grown up like a banyan tree. School and orphanage buildings were built and today it accomodates 100 orphan boys, 10 blind boys and 2700 school children, mainly from the rural area, in Kinder Garden, Primary and High Schools. A meaningful approach to education has been defined and the students are shaped into citizens, who could value human virtues, at the hands of more than 60 dedicated teaching staff. The School has been scoring 90% result on the average, every year, in the Board of Secondary Education.
In current educational year(2010-2011), there are 115 orphan boys are studying in this ashramam
We appeal to every one of you to give us a helping hand. Truly droplets make a ocean. We welcome your donations however small or big.
You may donate to provide full day meals or a lunch on a day of your choice, the birthdays of loved ones and other anniversary days. Our trust is registered under the Societies Registration Act. and also with the Indian income-tax Act. under Section 80-G for exemption.
